Sub-Zero 500 Series Sealed System Rebuild
Don't Replace It. Rebuild It.
The Sub-Zero 500 series — models 501, 511, 532, 550, 561, and 590 — is one of the most iconic refrigerator lines ever built. Introduced in the 1980s and produced through the early 2000s, these machines were built to last a lifetime. And with the right repair, they do. When a 500 series develops a sealed system failure, most companies walk away. We rebuild it. Certified Refrigeration has been performing full sealed system rebuilds on Sub-Zero 500 series refrigerators for over 50 years — compressor, heat exchanger, evaporator coil, filter drier — the complete restoration. Every rebuild comes with a full 2-year warranty.

What Does a Sub-Zero 500 Series Sealed System Rebuild Actually Involve?
A sealed system rebuild is the most involved repair we perform — and the one that separates true Sub-Zero specialists from general appliance companies. Most repair companies won't attempt it. We do it regularly.
The sealed system is the refrigeration circuit that keeps your Sub-Zero cold — the compressor, heat exchanger, evaporator coil, and the refrigerant lines that connect them. When any component in this circuit fails or develops a restriction, the machine stops cooling properly.
Here's what a full 500 series sealed system rebuild involves:

Compressor replacement — The compressor is the heart of the refrigeration system. When it fails or loses efficiency on a 500 series, we replace it with a direct OEM equivalent sourced through our authorized Sub-Zero parts distributor.
Heat exchanger replacement — The heat exchanger is one of the most common failure points on the 500 series. A restriction here causes the refrigerant circuit to back up and the machine to stop cooling entirely. We replace it completely.
Evaporator coil replacement — The evaporator is what actually cools the interior of the refrigerator. When it develops a leak or restriction, it must be replaced as part of the rebuild.
Filter drier replacement — Always replaced as part of any sealed system repair. A new drier ensures moisture is removed from the system and the new refrigerant charge stays clean.
Full refrigerant recovery, evacuation, and recharge — We recover the existing refrigerant properly, pull a deep vacuum on the system, and recharge with the correct refrigerant type and weight for your specific 500 series model.
We go even further when we rebuild 500 series and offer new thermostats, heaters, fan components, and virtually any other part and service like a door seal or a paint restoration.
Is a Sub-Zero 500 Series Worth Rebuilding?
Almost always yes — and we'll tell you honestly if it isn't. Check out our page where we write at length on the topic, or give us a call to discuss.
The Sub-Zero 500 series was built with a level of quality that modern refrigerators simply don't match. The cabinet, the door seals, the compressor compartment design — these machines were engineered to run for decades. A properly rebuilt 500 series will run for another 10 to 15 years after the repair.
The cost of a full sealed system rebuild is significantly less than replacing your Sub-Zero with a new unit — which starts at $10,000 and goes up from there. And you'd be replacing a machine built to last with one that hasn't proven itself yet.
We'll give you an honest assessment before any work begins. If we think your machine isn't worth repairing, we'll tell you that on the phone — before you pay a service charge.

Signs Your Sub-Zero 500 Series Needs a Sealed System Rebuild
Refrigerator not cooling but freezer is fine — classic sign of a refrigerant restriction or evaporator failure on the fresh food side.
Neither side cooling properly — points to a compressor failure or full sealed system restriction.
Compressor running constantly but not reaching temperature — the system is working but the refrigerant circuit is compromised.
Frost buildup on the evaporator — can indicate a restriction in the sealed system causing refrigerant to pool.
Machine is completely dead — in some cases a failed compressor causes the unit to shut down entirely.
If your 500 series is showing any of these symptoms, call us. We can often narrow down the diagnosis over the phone before we arrive.
